European Heritage Days 2018

On September 21-23, the annual European Heritage Days were held all over Lithuania. This year Lithuania celebrates a very important date – the centenary of the restoration of its independence. The theme of European Heritage Days of 2018 is “Discover the heritage of the Centenary“/”Atraskime šimtmečio paveldą”. The main goal of this year is to enhance the awareness of the importance of tangible cultural heritage while celebrating the Centennial of restored Lithuania, as well as the European Year of Cultural Heritage.

During September 20 – 21 Vilnius Old Town Renewal Agency together with Vilnius City Municipality organised 4 cognitive walks. 2 of them were presented by Monika Čekanauskaitė, the specialist of Vilnius municipal division of Cultural Heritage Protection. 1st walk took place in historical Bernardinai Cemetery, and the 2nd walk – in historical Rasos Cemetery. Rasos is the oldest cemetery in Vilnius, included into the list of most famous European Cemeteries. Many honoured Vilnius citizens are burried here.  The other 2 walks were presented by archaeologist dr. Kestutis Katalynas. He told about the oldest historical layers of Vilnius which were discovered during archaeological research.

During the European Heritage Days in Lithuania, cognitive walks, announcements, discussions, hikes, exhibitions, quizzes, competitions and other various activities were organized throughout Lithuania.  All European Heritage Days events are free.
