PROGRAMME "LOST VILNIUS"

The programme for the reconstruction of significant historic structures in Vilnius "Lost Vilnius" is designed to identify and, in individual cases, to reconstruct structures most significant to the city history, to preserve their authentic fragments and to adapt them to public needs; to encourage historic self-awareness of the community and to promote cultural tourism.

Under this programme, a qualitatively new phase in the implementation of the Old Town Revitalisation Programme started designed for the restoration of the authentic fine art and architectural values in surviving Old Town buildings, including preservation and restoration of a number of wall painting fragments in Old Town buildings. In 2002 wall painting fragments were found and restored in the Southern facade of the Gate of Dawn, facades of the Sacred Cross Church and Alumni buildings. Design works for the reconstruction of the bell tower of the Franciscan Monastery commenced in 2002.
