Programme for the Protection of Wooden Architectural Heritage

Building from wood dominated in our region from prehistoric times up to the II half of the XX century. Due to unique character and originality the Lithuanian wooden architectural heritage on the European level can be compared to the Lithuanian baroque. There are approximately 2000 of wooden buildings in Vilnius centre, and 200 of them are registered as protected properties.

The Programme of Primary Works regarding the Protection of Wooden Buildings and their Complexes (Groups) was approved by the Order of Director of Vilnius City Municipal Government Administration. A detailed measuring, photographing and general assessment of the unique wooden buildings (Polocko St. 52, Filaretų St. 8, Baltasis St. 7, Vytauto St. 29, Rūtų St. 6, Čiurlionio St. 33) and the state of the buildings constructions has been performed. Most valuable wooden buildings were selected in different city districts according the criteria of buildings’ architectural value, esthetic impact on local environment and community and localization in relation to intensively visited public institutions or spaces: streets, squares, paths. Since 2005 a part of funds of Vilnius Old Town Revitalisation Programme were alloted to the Programme for the Protection of Wooden Architectural Heritage.

In 2005 wooden buildings in Filaretų St. 8, Baltasis Lane. 7 and Čiurlionio St. 33 were repaired following technical protection means and restoring decorative elements of their facades. Inventoring of the most valuable wooden buildings continued.

In 2006 unique wooden buildings (Treniotos St.33, M.Paco St. 5, 5/1, 3a, Vytauto St. 27, 49, 61, 63, Pavasario St. 12, 14, Antakalnio St. 8a, Kalvarijų St. 64a, 64b, Giedraičių St. 31, S.Fino St. 3) were measured, photographed, state of their constructions and heritage value were evaluated. Renewal of building in Vytauto St. 27 (including the roof, facade and wooden carvings) was implemented. Restoration an renewal of building in Vytauto St. 63 was financed in co-operation of private and municipal resources (50 % each). The publication “Vilnius City Wooden Architectural Heritage Protection Strategy” was issued by Vilnius OTRA.

Two wooden buildings (Traidenio St. 35 and Pušų St. 16) were restored and upgraded
in 2008. All works were financed in direct co-operation of private and municipal resources (50 % each). All the restored and upgraded buildings are listed in the Register of Immovable Cultural Properties.
