RESTORATION PROGRAMME OF HISTORIC JEWISH GHETTO FRAGMENTS OF VILNIUS

The City of Vilnius, in cooperation with the Jewish Cultural Heritage Support Fund, is implementing Restoration Programme of Historical Jewish Ghetto Fragments of Vilnius. Several Vilnius Old Town quarters destroyed after World War 2 were chosen for reconstruction, based on the surviving iconographic material. Reconstructed buildings will be allocated for reviving of the Jewish cultural heritage and traditions, Old Town residential and business needs.

State-owned land lease public tender was organised for the triangle plot between Asmenos, Mesiniu and Dysnos streets in October of 2003. The land plot was leased for investors for 99 years. The land use is residential. According to the conservation requirements, investors had to restore authentic cellars and to reconstruct historic buildings of the site. There is one additional requirement from the side of Municipality: the investor must give 150 sq. m of the building space for Vilnius Jewish Cultural Support Fund. The Fund will use the premises for the purpose of the promotion and revitalisation of Jewish heritage. Implementation of this task will be part of the programme of "Reconstruction of fragments of Vilnius historic Jewish Ghetto".
Buildings were reconstructed in 2006.
